Conclusions

  • In order to maximise the lead times for flash flood detection and prediction, the use of a multi-sensor based severe weather detection and monitoring system is recommended.
  • Each data sensor (radar, satellite, rain gauge, lightning, etc.) should be exploited within an integrated data processing framework, since its use is likely to be optimised in this way.
  • This synergistic approach should also be applied to the validation, forecasting and warning generation components of an expert system, if optimum use of available information and forecasting expertise is to support rapid decision making, and ultimately, save life and property.
